Sweetners

Sucralose (known as Splenda), a more recent chemical addition to our diet, was approved by the FDA in 1998. Most studies were performed on animals.

Sucralose is chlorinated sugar. Chlorine is extremely toxic to the body. According to Johnson and Johnson, the manufacturers of Splenda, sucralose simply passes through the human body and does not accumulate in the tissue.

The FDA findings show that sucralose may be absorbed in the body from 11 - 27%. The Japanese Food Sanitation Counsel has determined that 20-30% may be accumulated in the gastro-intestinal tract, as well as the liver and kidneys.

The cumulative effects are still unknown. Most foods containing sucralose are highly processed and devoid of nutrients.

Sugar - The average consumption of sugar in North America is about half a cup a day. (The Sweet Miracle of Xylitol by Fran Gare, N.D., Basic Health Publications, 2003). Is it any wonder that diabetes, insulin resistance, candida (yeast) overgrowth, obesity, and behavioural disorders as well as degenerative diseases linked to high sugar intake are on the rise! Of course we all know that weight gain and cavities are sugar related as well.

One teaspoon of white sugar can shut down the virus-fighting cells of the immune system for several hours. Sugar is being linked to heart disease as it lowers HDL, the good fat, and raises triglycerides, the fat that creates plaquing.

Those with Candida Albicans yeast overgrowth infection experience relief of numerous symptoms by not consuming any sugar or starch, and building intestinal flora with probiotics.

If you catch a cold, virus or parasitic infection, avoid sugar and dairy completely during this time as it feeds infection.

A February 2003 study from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that middle-aged and elderly people with high blood sugar had a smaller hippocampus, the memory centre of the brain. The brain is the only tissue that depends on blood sugar for energy. Sugar needs to be cleared from the bloodstream as it is toxic. The liver stores it as glycogen. However with type 11 diabetes, memory problems are evident. Increased exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and decreasing sugar improves overall health, memory and longevity.

Limit the intake of sugar, honey, syrups, molasses, maple syrup and fruit juices, sucrose, fructose, maltose, lactose, glycogen, glucose, sorbitoll, galactose, monossaccharides and polysaccharides.. Read all labels.

If you are suffering from chronic illnesses, stop all sugar intake for three weeks. The rest of you, CUT BACK on the sugar habit. Remember, sugar is hidden in many foods. Ketchup for example contains 28% sugar.

Try sugar alternatives. Xylitol comes from birch bark, blueberry skins, corncobs and other natural sources. Xylitol has been used in Finland since World War II. Finnish researchers discovered that Xylitol prevents tooth decay. Streptococcus mutants, the bacteria which causes tooth decay could not break down or metabolize this sweetener. The accumulation of Xylitol in their systems blocked the ability of this bacteria to process other food sugars into the acids that destroy the teeth.

Dr. John Peldyak, a dental researcher from the University of Michigan sums up from the 25 years of research that chewing xylitol gum twice a day reduces tooth decay by 40%, three time daily, by 60%, and five times daily by 80%.

Stevia, another natural sweetener comes from an herb, easily grown in a pot on the patio. Unlike Xylitol, which can be used teaspoon for teaspoon like sugar, Stevia requires only small amounts. A sprig of the plant added to drinks or tea makes it remarkably sweet. It also benefits the arteries by relaxing them and increasing blood flow.
