Why Organic?I have grown food organically most of my adult life (a long time). I did it because food tasted better and I knew the value of the soil that was alive with beneficial micro-organisms and rich in natural nutrients. Irradiation of food which changes its molecular structure and mutates the micro-organisms is prevalent. Salmon, that is so popular and rich in omega 3 fatty acids may not be so nutritious if you are eating farmed salmon. These fish are farmed in crowded conditions, hatched in plastic trays and kept in unsanitary underwater cages. They are fattened with soy bean pellets filled with antibiotics and pesticides. Their beautiful pink colour is the result of a synthetic dye, which colours their pale gray coloured flesh. Paying for wild salmon may well be worth it! Then there is Mad Cow Disease (BSE). It is believed that it originated by giving cattle feed from dead animals - sheep, goats, cows and chickens, totally foreign to a vegetarian animal. Another theory is that organophosphate pesticide applied to the spinal column of cows is absorbed into their system to ward off warble flies. (Dr. Mercola - newsletter, Dec 31, 2003) Eating grass - fed beef or bison is much safer. Seventy percent of processed foods in grocery stores has some genetically engineered components. There are too few animal or human studies available in scientific literature. One of the dangers is the exposure to the many possible allergens. Soybeans with a brazil nut gene can cause problems for those with nut sensitivities. (Alternative Medicine, Sept, 2003). This is just the tip of the iceberg! Why not just eat organic! Too expensive? Check out these websites and have organic food delivered right to your home. http://www.fieldgateorganics.ca http://www.nutrafarms.comThe more we demand organic meats, fruits and vegetables, the sooner prices will come down! Real food is available to us as consumers if we demand it. Education is the key. Our health and the health of future generations is our priority and our responsibility. |
